Winter Classes

Start Quilting with Alex Anderson Bernina of America and Alex Anderson have developed a beginning quilting class for Patchwork Plus to use in our store.  In this class, students will learn all the techniques needed to complete a quilt; rotary cutting, piecing, borders, quilting, and binding.  The purpose of this class is to offer students a basic introduction into the wonderful world of quilting.  Included in the cost of the class is the book "Start Quilting with Alex Anderson."  This is a 4 session class.  Class fee:  $50.00 plus supplies.

Beginner Instructor, Linda Tice

Valances Learn how to measure your window and create your own valance.  You may choose which topping for your valance to slide on the rod.  Use grommets, make a casing, or add tabs.  Again, we will be emphasizing how to use your rotary cutter, and accuracy on seam allowances.  Class fee:  $35.00 plus supplies.

Pillowcase & Table Runner See how fast and easy it is to sew a pillowcase and hide your seams.  These make wonderful birthday gifts or "just because" gifts.  Again, we will emphasize accuracy in sewing seam allowances.  The table runner can be made in 10 minutes.  Learn how to improve your rotary cutting skills at the same time.  Class fee:  $35.00 plus supplies.

Pillow Talk Sew 2 1/2" strips together to make a chevron type throw pillow. It's fun and easy.  You will learn how to sew an accurate seam, how to use a rotary cutter, and make an envelope style opening for your pillow form.  Class fee:  $35.00 plus supplies.

Personalized Lap/Baby Quilt This is the time you can make your college child or grandchild a personalized quilt. You will be able to pick and choose the style of lettering as well as the applique designs that you use.  Class fee:  $30.00 plus supplies.

Serge & Merge —Choose from 2 different patterns in the book Serge & Merge Quilts and decide which one you would like to do to sharpen your skills on the serger.  "Down the Pathway" (p. 102) or "Look at Me Bag" (p. 112).  The different serger skills are listed under the project description.  All of them will help you become more comfortable with using your serger.  Bernina sergers only.  If you have a different brand of serger, and are very familiar with your serger, call the instructor.  Class fee: $35.00 plus supplies.

Triangle Frenzy Hexagon Table Topper —Cut some triangles, spin them around, rearrange them, and sew them together, large or small.  So many variations can be created with this pattern.  Just use your 60 degree triangle and striped fabric and start creating.  I bet you can't make just one.  Class fee:  $25.00 plus supplies.

Basket of Love —Speed piece flying geese blocks using the five minute and only one seam geese technique.  Jazz it up by curving the triangle edges.  Fast, easy construction make this a traditional favorite.  We will be adding applique into the mix.  Learn how to do a basic applique on your flowers.  Class fee:  $35.00 plus supplies.

Wedding Ring —Using templates we will construct a traditional double wedding ring table runner.  You can make the adjustments for a full size quilt pretty easily.  Use your scraps or color coordinate your pieces.  You will need to be able to sew an accurate 1/4" seam allowance.  We will be working with curves and Y seams.  Come prepared to have fun.  Class fee:  $35.00 plus supplies.

Winding Ways—This is a curved piecing block consisting of three basic shapes.  The individual blocks remind me of a butterfly.  Once the blocks are pieced together, they form the secondary interlocking circles that give them the appearance of "winding ways".  We will be constructing this block with a curved piecing technique using a 1/4" foot with guide.  Although the class project is 60" x 60", it can be made into a larger (or smaller) quilt.  Class fee:  $35.00 plus supplies.

Main Street Log Cabin —Come join me for a fun time of making a complex looking log cabin wall quilt.  The Log Cabin block is ideal for quilters with limited experience.  It has basic shapes, simple contrasts, and minimal joints.  The centers of the stars in this pattern are built like Log Cabins, as are the sashes.  At the end of the 4 weeks, your quilt will be pieced and ready to quilt.  Class fee:  $40.00 plus supplies.

Swirling Circles —This thirty-six piece block is constructed using both squares and curved piecing.  By careful placement of color, we get a "swirling circle" design.  We will be constructing this block with a curved piecing technique using a 1/4" foot with guide.  Although the class project is 63" x 63", it can be made into a larger quilt.  Class fee:  $35.00 plus supplies.

Diamonds Within—This quilt is from Barbara's latest book, Diamond Chain Quilt.  This eight pointed star has a diamond chain running through the star.  In this class you will learn how to strip piece, tricks on how to piece an eight-pointed star, and how easy it is to cut 45 degree angles.  No extra rulers are required.  Class fee:  $35.00 plus supplies.
